Juan Pablo Montoya's pole position average lap speed eclipsed Keke Rosberg's 17-year old record of 259.005 km/h set in Silverstone on a turbocharged Williams Honda during the 1985 British Grand Prix. This is Montoya's tenth career pole position, his seventh this season with no victory.

The BMW qualifying engines powering both Williams cars broke the 19,000 rpm barrier for the first time in competition, a new Formula 1 record.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen was demoted to sixth from fifth place on the starting grid after his best qualifying time was annuled as a penalty for causing a collision with Jordan's Takuma Sato during qualifying.
